Fare Thee Well

by A J Dalton

Soon, we’ll have to leave the planet
To find another home
We fiddled while the climate burned
Like Nero watching Rome.
Look upwards to that distant place
And left of that bright star
A dark world waits there just for us
They say it’s not too far.
We can’t take more than one bag each
So leave most things behind
You won’t need money, naturally
And art works? Never mind.
We’ll get ten thousand off our world
Enough to start again
It’s sad to leave so many friends
I’ll pray for you, Amen.
Word is we might return some day
So no need to despair
The Earth will grow anew once more
And you’ll be waiting there.
